Before you commit to lifting a toilet, wipe everything dry and re-create the wet zone:
- After flushes only, near the closet bolts / rear of the base: more consistent with wax/flange leakage (especially with odor).

Wax ring basics (and brief waxless note)
A traditional wax ring compresses between the toilet horn and the closet flange to make a water- and gas-tight joint. Fluidmaster’s 7510 standard wax sheet tells installers to keep wax warm enough to flow (their sheet cites at least about 70°F), press the ring on the bowl outlet with any plastic flange extending away from the bowl, set the bowl, use body weight to compress, and tighten bolts carefully to avoid breaking the bowl. Reinforced/flanged kits (for example 7511-style sheets) add a plastic funnel and often include bolts.
Do not reuse a wax ring that has already been compressed by a prior set or disturbed by a lift. The compressed shape will not reliably reseal.
Waxless seals use rubber/foam geometries instead of wax. They can be appropriate on some repairs, especially when height or cleanliness is a concern — but installation steps differ by brand. Tools and materials
- New wax ring (standard or thick/flanged as your flange height requires) or a waxless seal kit
- New closet bolts, washers, and nuts (recommended whenever the old set is rusted)
- Putty knife; towels; rubber gloves; rag for the flange opening
- Adjustable wrench; hacksaw for excess bolt length if needed
- Plastic shims rated for toilets if the bowl rocks on a sound floor

Replacement procedure
- Isolate. Close the stop, flush, sponge the tank, disconnect the supply, and remove any water remaining in the bowl with a cup/sponge if you want a cleaner lift.
- Unbolt. Pry off bolt caps. Remove nuts and washers. If bolts spin, hold them from turning. Severely rusted bolts may need penetrating oil or cutting — stop if you are damaging the flange ears.
- Lift straight up. Rock gently only enough to break the old seal, then lift vertically with a helper. Set the toilet on cardboard or towels. Immediately stuff a rag in the open flange.
- Clean. Scrape all old wax from the horn and from the flange. Wipe debris that would keep a new ring from seating.
- Inspect the flange and floor. Look for cracked plastic, missing bolt slots, rusted-away metal, screws pulling out of soft wood, or a flange sitting obviously below or above the finished floor. - Set closet bolts. Place new bolts in the flange slots, upright and aligned with the bowl holes, secured so they cannot tip while you lower the toilet.
- Place the new seal. For many wax kits: press the ring onto the toilet horn with the plastic sleeve pointing toward the flange (Kohler Assist: tapered end of a plastic cone insert oriented downward into the flange). Some installers prefer setting wax on the flange — follow your ring’s sheet either way. For waxless kits, follow that geometry exactly.
- Remove the rag and lower. Align bolt holes. Lower the bowl in one controlled motion onto the centerline. Apply body weight evenly to compress the seal. Do not lift or rock the bowl after it is set — Kohler install language treats that as a broken seal requiring a new wax ring.
- Secure. Install washers and nuts. Tighten alternately left/right until the bowl is stable — firm, not extreme. If the bowl still rocks, shim under the base on a sound floor rather than overtightening china to “pull it down.” Cut excess bolt length if required and install caps.
- Reconnect and prove. Reattach the supply, open the stop slowly, fill the tank, flush several times, wipe the base dry, and watch for new moisture or odor. Recheck nuts after a short settle if the maker allows a light re-snug — still without cranking.

Rocking toilets: stabilize — do not rely on wax as a cushion
Wax compresses to seal; it is not a structural pad for a rocking bowl. Movement after installation shears the seal and invites leaks and sewer gas. If the bowl rocks:
- Confirm the flange is intact and near the correct height relative to the finished floor
- Use toilet shims on a solid floor, then trim flush
- Repair broken bolt slots with an appropriate flange repair ring when the substrate is sound
- Call a pro when the floor structure is soft or the soil pipe/flange needs replacement
What not to do
- Do not reuse a wax ring after the toilet has been lifted or the seal disturbed
- Do not keep rocking the bowl after set to “line it up”
- Do not overtighten closet bolts to hide a rock
- Do not assume every base puddle is wax — check condensation, supply, tank bolts, and tank-to-bowl gasket

FAQ
Can I reuse the wax ring if it “looks fine”? No — once compressed or disturbed by a lift, replace it. Makers treat a broken set as a new-ring event.
