What color is your toilet stain?
Color is a useful clue, but it is not a laboratory test. Texture, water source, location, and how quickly the stain returns often tell you more than color alone.

White or gray crust: why bleach may disappoint
Bleach is an oxidizing disinfectant. It is not a good dissolver of calcium scale. If the problem is a hard mineral crust, an appropriately labeled acidic descaler is usually the more relevant chemistry.
That distinction explains a familiar bathroom mystery: a bowl can smell strongly “clean” while the rough ring is still sitting there, unimpressed.
Orange or brown: ask where your water comes from
Iron in the water can oxidize and leave rusty stains. This is common with some wells but can occur elsewhere too. If the deposit is hard and rusty, a rust/mineral-stain product may be more useful than a general disinfectant.
If the orange material is soft or slimy, the problem may be different. Texture matters.
Pink film: color is not an organism ID
Pink or peach bathroom film is often described online as a specific bacterium, but a photograph cannot reliably identify a microorganism. Treat it as a sanitation and moisture-management problem unless you have actual testing.
Black: the least useful color for guessing
Black deposits can come from several sources. Manganese can darken mineral deposits. Damp surfaces can support microbial growth. Old scale can trap dirt and become dark. Start with texture and water history rather than jumping to one cause.
Three questions that narrow the problem quickly
- Is it rough or slimy? Rough points toward mineral buildup; slimy points toward film.
- Does it return at exactly the waterline? Repeated wet-dry cycling and dissolved minerals are likely contributing.
- Do sinks, tubs, or fixtures show the same color? If yes, the water supply itself becomes a stronger suspect.
Do not turn diagnosis into a chemistry experiment
Never mix cleaning products to see what happens. Acids and chlorine-releasing products can react dangerously. Use one product at a time, follow its label, rinse as directed, and ventilate the room.
After the stain is gone
