Do this quick tank-and-bowl test first

Lift the tank lid and compare the tank water with the bowl.

If both the tank and bowl water are discolored, the color is probably arriving with the water or entering upstream of the toilet. Check another cold-water fixture. If several fixtures show orange or brown staining, the water supply or household plumbing deserves attention.

  1. Ventilate the bathroom and put on cleaning gloves.
  2. Flush the toilet and use a toilet brush to remove loose material first.
