Why Does My Toilet Keep Running? 7 Common Causes and How to Fix Them

If your toilet keeps running, start by looking inside the tank. In most gravity toilets, the problem is one of four things: the flush seal is leaking, the fill valve is not shutting off, the float is set too high, or refill water is being routed incorrectly. The good news is that you can usually narrow the cause down in a few minutes without removing the toilet.

First, listen to what kind of running you have

A toilet that runs continuously is different from one that becomes quiet and then refills for a few seconds every few minutes. Continuous flow often points to the fill valve, float setting, or water spilling into the overflow pipe. Intermittent refilling often points to water slowly leaking from the tank into the bowl through the flapper or flush seal.

1. The flapper or flush seal is not sealing

On many two-piece toilets, a rubber flapper covers the opening at the bottom of the tank. Other toilets use a canister or tower-style seal. If that seal is warped, dirty, mineral-coated, misaligned, or simply worn out, tank water can leak slowly into the bowl. As the tank level falls, the fill valve turns back on. That creates the familiar cycle of silence, hiss, silence, hiss.

With the toilet idle, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank water without flushing. If color appears in the bowl after 15 to 30 minutes, water is crossing from the tank to the bowl. Inspect the flush seal and replace it with the correct model if it is damaged.

2. The chain is too short, too long, or snagged

A chain pulled too tight can keep a flapper slightly open. Too much slack can let the chain catch under the flapper. The chain should have a little slack when the handle is at rest, while still lifting the flapper cleanly when you flush.

Also look for a chain rubbing a float, refill tube, or other hardware. A tiny mechanical interference can create a surprisingly persistent leak.

3. The float is set too high

The float tells the fill valve when the tank is full. If the target water level is set too high, water can rise to the top of the overflow pipe and continuously drain into the bowl. The fill valve then keeps trying to replace it.

Look for the manufacturer's waterline mark inside the tank. The normal water level should stay below the top of the overflow pipe. Adjust the float using the method specified for your fill valve rather than bending parts at random.

4. The fill valve will not shut off

If the water level is correct but the valve keeps hissing or passing water, the fill valve may be dirty, worn, or failing internally. Before replacing it, make sure the float can move freely and is not touching the tank wall, dispenser, refill tube, or another component.

If the float moves normally and the valve still will not stop, replacing the fill valve is often the practical fix. Turn off the toilet's supply valve before disassembly and follow the replacement valve instructions.

5. The refill tube is pushed too far down the overflow pipe

The small refill tube is supposed to send water toward the bowl after a flush. In many toilets it is clipped above the overflow opening, maintaining an air gap. If the tube is shoved deeply down the pipe or below the tank waterline, it can contribute to siphoning or incorrect refill behavior.

6. The handle or flush mechanism is sticking

A handle that does not return fully can leave the chain under tension. Press and release the handle while watching the mechanism. It should return freely and allow the seal to close completely. Clean or replace a sticking handle assembly if necessary.

7. Mineral buildup or debris is interfering with moving parts

Hard-water deposits can make floats, seals, and valve components less cooperative. Turn off the water and inspect contact surfaces before assuming every part needs replacement. Use only cleaning methods compatible with the toilet and valve manufacturer. Never mix toilet-cleaning chemicals.

A fast running-toilet decision tree

  1. Water is visibly going into the overflow pipe: check float height and fill valve.
  2. Water level stays below the overflow, but the toilet periodically refills: check the flapper or flush seal.
  3. The problem began after someone worked inside the tank: check the chain and refill-tube position.
  4. The valve hisses even with the float raised to its shutoff position: the fill valve may need service or replacement.

When to call a plumber

Call for help if the shutoff valve will not close, the tank or bowl is cracked, water is leaking onto the floor, the toilet rocks at the base, or the problem involves the supply line or drainage system rather than the tank mechanism.
