- Adjust height before final tightening. Many valves twist at the shank to raise/lower. Position so the critical level (C.L.) mark sits about 1 inch above the top of the overflow tube — a common Universal Plumbing Code reference noted in manufacturer literature.

- Insert the valve with the refill port aimed toward the overflow.

Restore water, adjust, and leak-check
- Open the shutoff slowly. Let the tank fill.
- Adjust the float so water stops roughly ½ inch below the top of the overflow tube (or to the tank’s waterline mark).
- Flush once. Confirm the valve refills, shuts off, and the bowl refill stream looks normal.
- Feel the shank, supply nut, and locknut for dampness. Watch through a full cycle.
