Classic flush-valve replacement (ordered steps)

Always prefer the printed instructions for your kit. Representative Fluidmaster 507-series guidance includes overflow height and locknut caution language like the following pattern:

  1. Shut off water. Flush, sponge the tank dry, and place towels under the tank and supply.
  2. Disconnect the supply from the fill-valve shank. Unclip the refill tube from the overflow.
  3. Unbolt the tank from the bowl evenly. Lift the tank straight up and set it on towels on a stable surface. Remove old bolts and the old tank-to-bowl gasket.
  4. Remove the old flush valve (including flapper/tank ball) from the tank bottom opening.
  5. Set overflow height before final assembly. Common guidance: the top of the overflow should be at least 1 inch below the tank lever hole. Some adjustable valves twist to set height; others may require careful cutting only as the kit directs.
  6. Install the new flush valve with the overflow oriented toward the back of the tank. Keep tank bolt holes clear. Install washers/gaskets as shown in the kit.
  7. Tighten the locknut carefully. Many Fluidmaster sheets specify roughly hand-tight plus about ½ turn — and explicitly say do not overtighten or the tank may crack. Do not invent brand-specific torque numbers beyond what your sheet states.
  8. Install the tank-to-bowl gasket on the flush-valve shank as directed for your toilet style.
  9. Reseat the tank on the bowl so the gasket sits evenly. Install tank bolts and tighten evenly — snug, not aggressive. Overtightening can crack the bowl.
  10. Reconnect the flapper chain with slight slack when closed, attach the refill tube to feed the overflow opening (not submerged deep), and reconnect the supply hand-tight.
  11. Open the shutoff slowly. Set the fill waterline about ½ inch below the overflow top. Flush, watch for leaks at the locknut, gasket, bolts, and supply, then dye-test the seal path if needed.

What not to do

  • Do not crank the locknut “extra tight for good measure.”
  • Do not tighten tank bolts unevenly on one side only.
  • Do not force a classic flapper valve into a canister/tower toilet.
  • Do not leave the refill tube inserted deep into standing overflow water.
  • Do not continue if porcelain chips, cracks, or a bolt head shears.

Do I always have to lift the tank? For most classic flush-valve swaps, yes — the valve locks under the tank. Some specialty kits differ; follow what your parts require.
